Rhodium (Rh)

Video (3 MB)

Jarosite (Iron Sulfate) containing a surprising amount of Rhodium.
The video illustrates some of various spectral lines for Rhodium emanating from this mineral.

Image taken with digital camera. The flaky jarosite was scraped off the sample shown above and placed on this graphite pad that is resting on the ceramic crucible (boat), then subjected to the high heat of the Vreeland’s electrodes.

The fused (melted) jarosite. The image was captured with digital camera
I often use the graphite pads for 2 reasons: 1) helps reduce minerals to metals and 2) allows me to use the boat for another fusion thereby saving the cost of expendables.

20x – a magnified view of previous image as seen through the microscope illustrating a crystalline semi-metallic bead.

40x – A magnified view of the preceding image. The imaged was captured via microscope ccd camera connected to computer.
