Gold (Au)
Location source = This piece of gold cut off from a Chinese Panda 999 gold coin.
Color is accurate
Size is approximately 1/16” in diameter.
Image created with B&L SZ5 microscope @ 40x, coupled to a ccd camera and computer.
The only sublimate is what is shown. When the prill was in a melted stage the sublimate was a lavender with pinkish tones, but when cooled to ambient temp this reddish pink coloration.
Notice the dimpling, which is a sign of obvious contamination and is likely one or more of the pgm’s. When this tiny piece of gold was being melted forming a bead/prill there could be seen a blackish grunge floating on it and not matter how much heat was applied this contamination would not become an oxide. Thos contamination is just enough to slightly alter the normal golden color that 24K or 999 gold is supposed to be.
The gold prill rests in a carved out depression to help keep the metal stationary or in a confined area so the blast from propane torch would not dislodge it.
Part of the reason of posting this image is to show that what appears to the eye is not always what is accurate.
