Stibnite (Antimony Sulfide)

as1

10x
Stibnite = Antimony Sulfide (Sb2S3)
Specimen from: China
Purity = unknown
This above image is a small fragment (1” x 1/8” x 1/8”) that I removed from a 7” long x 2" wide x 1" thick specimen for this image.
There is no mistaking the large original specimen as anything other than stibnite.

Stibnite (Antimony Sulfide)
Sublimate colors are accurate.
Image taken with 35mm camera and a 135mm lens, set at macro for close-up focusing, shutter speed = 1/125th of second in cloudy conditions using 200 film and developed by Kodak 1 hour commercial labs and then digitized.
Stibnite crystal blade subjected to prolonged heat (oxidizing part of flame).
The piece of stibnite rests in a carved out depression to help keep the mineral in confined area so the blast from propane torch would not dislodged it.
Additional blowpipe and simple chemical tests can be applied to confirm or deny if stibnite.

Stibite -- Sb2S3
Image created with B&L SZ5 microscope, coupled to a ccd camera and computer.
This digital image color is very close to the physical.
Obvious melting has occurred, but this 1/4” long x 1/16” wide x 1/64” thick bladed crystal can be turned over and seen that only the surface was affected by the heat from propane torch.
Some melting has occurred along with some absorption into the plaster tablet.
Dense white smoke occurs while heating antimony minerals or metal.

Antimony Sulphide (SbS)

as4

Stibnite (SbS) that has been pulverized and heated with oxidizing flame on blackened plaster tablet to produce the typical white sublimate.
Color = Accurate
Image obtained with 35mm camera and a 135mm lens, set at macro for close-up focusing, shutter speed = 1/125th of second in semi-cloudy conditions using 200 film and developed by a CVS Kodak 1 hour processing lab and then digitized. I have tried using various commercial film processing and found them all wanting except CVS pharmacy.
I have also tried to use various digital cameras and was not satisfied with produced colors, so I continue using the old 35mm camera that has been largely replaced with digital equipment.
